This sincere movie, based on the true story of Bill Porter, a door-to-door salesman with cerebral palsy, manages to avoid being overly sentimental thanks to a well-balanced sense of humor and the exceptional performance of William H. Macy. Door to Door chronicles Porter's journey from convincing a doubtful sales manager to give him the toughest sales route in the company in the mid-1950s, to his eventual retirement in the late 1990s as door-to-door sales fell out of favor due to the rise of catalogs and the Internet. While the portrayal of Porter embedding himself into the lives of his customers may seem a bit predictable, the characterization of Porter himself, especially how his unwavering independent spirit acted as a barrier between himself and others, is authentic and moving. The film also stars Kyra Sedgwick and the legendary Helen Mirren in the role of Porter's mother, adding further depth to the narrative. Bret Fetzer praises the movie for its genuine portrayal of Porter and the balance it strikes between sentimentality and authenticity, making it a compelling watch.
